Method of Verification Request Letter:

After filing a dispute with a credit bureau, you may receive a response claiming the information was “verified as accurate.” But how did they verify it?
The Method of Verification Request Letter gives you the legal right to ask exactly how a bureau confirmed the information—and who supplied the verification—under Section 611(a)(7) of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).

At Middle Credit Score®, we empower consumers to repair their credit the right way—by understanding the law and using free, compliant tools.
This letter, along with dozens of others, is part of our Credit Dispute Letters Support Center, built to help you manage every stage of the dispute process with confidence.

🔍 When to Use a Method of Verification Request Letter

Use this follow-up letter if:

  • A bureau claims a disputed item was “verified” without explanation.
  • You suspect the bureau didn’t contact the original creditor.
  • You want documentation showing who verified the information and how.
  • You’re preparing to escalate your case to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) or your State Attorney General.

This letter requires the bureau to disclose its verification procedure or delete the unverified item entirely.

💡 Why This Letter Matters

Credit bureaus often rely on automated systems rather than real investigations. By sending a Method of Verification Request Letter, you:

  • Force the bureau to reveal how they validated your dispute.
  • Establish a paper trail that supports future complaints if they fail to comply.
  • Increase the likelihood that unverifiable data will be permanently deleted.
  • Strengthen your Middle Credit Score® by ensuring your report is based only on verified, accurate information.

When credit bureaus know you understand your rights, they take your disputes more seriously.

🧭 Step-By-Step: How to Send

  1. Wait until you receive the bureau’s dispute results letter.
  2. Identify which items were marked “verified.”
  3. Complete the Method of Verification Request Letter below with the item details and date of the original dispute.
  4. Include copies of your identification and proof of address.
  5. Send your letter by certified mail with return receipt within 15 days of receiving the bureau’s response.

If the bureau fails to respond within a reasonable period or cannot explain its verification method, you can file a complaint with the CFPB or your state regulator.
